Anyone out there who shares my affinity for shows like Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Sealab 2021, Space Ghost C-t0-C, and Robot Chicken will be interested to hear that Adult Swim is taking the bold step into Internet broadcasting. As many of you may know, Adult Swim programming is shown all nights but Friday on the cartoon network. Starting September 16th, broadband users will be able to watch Adult Swim content online on Friday nights from 11pm to 6am for free. The sampling will consist of fan requested episodes of their favorite shows, and previews of programming for the coming week.
While this offering is limited by a specific time frame, and certainly not maximizing the potential of Internet video content providing, it is certainly something that I consider to be a step in the right direction. Sure, staying home on a Friday night to watch Adult Swim over the Internet is dorky, but imagine an evolved offering where shows which are 'out of rotation' or not being show at the time at which the consumer can view them could be purchased for a reasonable price with certain viewing/copying restrictions. Things like this should catalyze the spread of On-Demand media beyond a set-top box, and bring this level of service and content to the free web.
