HELP! - I ran that Ad-Aware scan, and now my KaZaA doesn't work. Here is where things come full-circle. First off, the run-of-the-mill version of KaZaA you are using comes complete with mounds of spyware that thanks to Ad-Aware, has now been removed. The problem is that KaZaA doesn't want you to be able to use their service without active spyware which is more than likely the reason you get tons of pop-up ads while using it. The second issue is legal in nature. Now, I am not going to tell you to stop trading music online because you're violating copyrights and being morally deviant. If you want to know MY opinion just read my paper on the RIAA. What I am going to tell you is how to reduce the risk of getting caught. Luckily the solution to both of these problems is housed within the same program... K++.
...for those of you well versed in alternative methods of file trading bear in mind that this guide is geared towards the layman, they're incredibly loyal to their KaZaA...
KaZaA Lite K++ Edition - Some of you may already be using "KaZaA Lite", which is great if you're looking to avoid the evils of spyware, but doesn't do much to protect you from the RIAA. What you need to upgrade to is KaZaA Lite K++ Edition. After installing you will notice that you no longer have to provide a log on name when connecting. (in theory) no logon name - no IP matching - no lawsuit. This does not eliminate the risk, however. The first thing you'll want to do is disable you're shared directory. If you're not serving any files, you're pretty safe. But I know what you're thinking - If I don't share, KaZaA will not allow me to download from other users. Wrong AGAIN, K++ provides you with tools to exploit KaZaA's ranking system. I am not sharing any files, but my user service rating is max'ed out at 1000, putting me 1st in line for most popular downloads.
Disclaimer: It is important to understand that by file-sharing copyrighted material, you are in fact breaking the law. Chances of getting caught, though slim, ARE on the increase. The best way not to get caught is to stop sharing pirated software & media.
